Below is some information on Messina Quartz:

Ajoite Phantom Quartz is a very rare crystal formation that has been found in only one mine in Messina, South Africa.

This mine was primarily a commercial copper mine and the quartz crystals with ajoite inclusions were brought out by individual miners secretly. Another small discovery of Ajoite in agatized Quartz was made in Zimbabwe. Both of these finds have been exhausted for years and the only Ajoite in the marketplace comes from old stocks from the two African discoveries. The last discovery was in 1991 at the Messina mine in excess of 4000 feet below the surface. The mine was closed down in 1992 and, because of the dangerous nature of the tunnels, it was dynamited and sealed with concrete. It is highly unlikely that the mine will ever be opened again.

As a result of this, the Ajoite crystals, which are much prized by serious mineral collectors as well as to metaphysical users and crystal healers, are virtually impossible to obtain.

Ajoite Phantom Quartz is an inclusion variety of the mineral Quartz. Ajoite has a chemical composition of CaCuAlSi2O6(OH)3 Hydrated Potassium Sodium Copper Aluminum Silicate Hydroxide. Quartz containing Ajoite often also contains one or more of the following minerals: copper, hematite, cuprite, epidote, limonite, chlorite, calcite, and papagoite. They are seldom clear quartz and many of them have crusty coatings of other minerals, commonly calcite or epidote, on the outside surface obscuring the ajoite inclusions and phantoms. Quartz included Ajoite is 7 on the Mohs hardness scale.
